This song feels so appropriate for quarantine.. The Universal, we are all artifically conected, yet we long for real life interaction. This song is comforting but also makes you feel lonely. Hopefull but sad. Days bluring into one another

Notice that Graham Coxon is barely in the video for The Universal.
He wasn't in a good place at the time, didn't like the song and on the day of filming was several hours late. When he did turn up he told his colleagues he would be staying no longer than an hour.
Most of the shots you see of Graham, it's not actually him.

This is the next century
Where the universal's free
You can find it anywhere
Yes, the future has been sold
Every night we're gone
And to karaoke songs
How we like to sing a long
Although the words are wrong
It really, really, really could happen
Yes, it really, really, really could happen
When the days they seem to fall through you,
well just let them go
No one here is alone, satellites in every home
Yes the universal's here. Here for everyone
Every paper that you read
Says: "tomorrow is your lucky day"
Well, here's your lucky day
It really, really, really could happen

There’s a much deeper meaning behind this song than a tribute to Orange Clockwork. Blur were most prominent during the Blair Labour years and I think this song is based around a critique of New Labour.

The first point is Orange Clockwork is about a dystopian England and Albarn’s ‘The Universal’ says we’re actually living it.

The red man is a Labour voter who is asked how long he’s been a ‘red man’ (Labour party’s colour). He says 15 years which I think will have been how long Labour abandoned their socialist principals in the early 90s in favour of more pro-corporate policies. The red man is asked what he was before and he replies that he was a blue man (the colour of the conservative party). The point here is that there isn’t a difference between New Labour and the Tories.

Next is the men with the red tinted glasses. They’re looking up in their glasses and recognise what is unfolding before them. Almost like they’ve seen this politics before. The red tinted glasses are a disguise but people are waking up to what it really is. This is because New Labour politics were not dissimilar to Neo-liberal Thatcher/ Reagan politics of the 1980s. The blue drink everyone is being fed, including these two men, is Tory policies. Blue being the Conservative party colours.

Meanwhile, the working classes are kept outside ‘the universal’ - the flying satellites which the song is set in. It’s a satellite because this is paying homage to Blair’s PR team who hyped up New Labour - a supposedly radical form of politics - and broadcasted it to the nation through various forms of media; ‘it’s the Sun wot won it’ - also backed up by the lyrics ‘every paper that you read says tomorrow’s your lucky day’.

Blair was heralded for not being anti gay and even reducing the age of consent for gays. I think the two flirting men represent this and their approval of what is going on around them, giddy on the blue liquid. One of the men is in shock but something the other man says startles him. One would assume it’s about the truth of Blair’s reign which makes him realise it’s all a ploy to vote for him.

I’m less sure about the other characters. I think the man with the women surrounding him perhaps represent a general pervertedness about the whole movement. While the woman with the businessmen around her perhaps demonstrate the seductive nature of this brand of politics to corporations.

Finally, Damon Albarn is Blair. It’s ironic the number of people talking about how handsome Albarn is in the comments and loving his smiles in the video because this is exactly what he thought was seducing voters; Blair’s style. At the end of the video Albarn walks towards the camera as do the people outside the Universal. He quickly holds out his hands to stop everyone. A final hint that he thinks New Labour is holding the masses back.

Either way it’s a great song with a very strong meaning however you interpret it.

Fun fact about me: songs, or movies, like these where they talk about uncertain future, especially when they say "we're gone", often give me existential crisis (that and planetariums). Not this one though. It somehow gives me hope for a better future.

Wow! Reading the comments I was surprised that not many people got the ClockWork Orange reference! The one eye in black liner, they even popped up the hat a few times, and made all the right sexual references. And when someone says this is the worse Blur song, really, THE worse. I love Blur, but I can name other songs that aren't that great.I do love the priest lunging at the poor guy next to him at the end of the video! Great! Now I want to watch ClockWork Orange again.

Bye bye nice music. What happened that we don't have anything like oasis or blur anymore, it makes me so sad. I don't mean Brit pop/rock, I mean good meaningful music.. The magic for me was always figuring out what they're really trying to say. I think a lot of people hate today's music, seemingly quite irrationally, its not irrational the more cack they pump out, the more people forget real music, the more it sounds 'old and cheesy'. Has anyone else noticed how media across the board has been dumbed down? Music is retarded, movies are all superhero movies, even games! Everything is so easy now. I know I sound like 40 but I'm actually 22. I feel like I'm 80!!
