Mcgregor had greater skill than dustin 5 years ago, but dustin stayed constant with his training while mcgregor was on and off. The real lesson from this fight is that consistancy of training beats high end talent that is not consistant.

When Poierier fought Gaethji he felt first hand the destructivness of that calf kick, when he fought Khabib he felt first hand the energy sapping effects of the clinches and ground game, and Poirer used both to beat Connor, clear to see Poierer learns from each fight..I hope he is crowned LWC.

conor should get back to his old style,he was fighting inside too much so much force on the front leg,he didnt kick porier to the body even once,he didnt kick at all his deadly weapons,he should train with his movement coach ido portal again,im sure he will be back stronger than ever
Deividas Davailis
Deividas Davailis:
Leg kicks was only a part. He established double threat of either takedown or a punch, by starting sequence with same footwork. Was able to counter left hand with right hooks. Leg kicking just made all of it it easier but Dustin and his team had multiple aswers to the Connor question.

Conor should have went for his own leg kicks going in - his leg kicks against Diaz II were fantastic

Leading up to UFC 246, Conor’s Coach - John Kavanagh said: “Conor knows more about fighting than the rest of us put together.”

Do you think part of Conor’s downfall is that he has taken more control of the direction of his trainings / strategy for fights? Rather than lean on his coach, that can help him with his blind spots and be more objective?

If I were Conor:
Take Iaquinta in May, Diaz in August, Hooker in December.
Then go for a title shot early 2022.
I would rack up some wins before going for the title. Because the likes of Gathje, Oliveria & Poirier are tough fights for him rn.
But we all know Conor will probably get a title shot a lot sooner because of his name.

Dustin said in the post conference that the shot hurt him and if connor would have followed up he would have been in trouble. So it was not 1shot kill but...
Bryan Gan
Bryan Gan:
The leg kicks aren't the only reason why Conor over-extends on his rear hand punch. He does it almost all the time, especially because he tends to prefer if his opponent circles to his right, away from his power hand. His most successful punch is when he throws the left cross across the inside to catch the circling opponent.

It is bad punch mechanics, but he gets away with it because of how accurate he is; the opponent cannot take advantage of his being off balance for a moment because they get hit by it and are hurt.

Conor's talent is not so much that the left hand is some unstoppable shot, but he is great at getting the fight to a situation where his accuracy and the opponent's over-extension and off-balance causes them to be unable to take the shot. His round kicks get them moving in the direction he wants them to, and his linear/straight kicks maintains an uncomfortable distance, combined with his lead handfighting, to bait them to reach/lunge in, and then he can step/lean back and counter.

I don’t really remember a fight where Conor was getting rocked and came back to win. He seems to lose all energy when his initial game plan doesn’t work. But props to Dustin. Big heart. Hard worker.

Conor doesn't need motivation, he needs discipline and I feel like his coach is too much of a yes man to do that. It's as if Conor is his own coach and his team is just there to play cheer leader

Conor lost because he didn’t kick enough himself and didn’t check or dodge Dustins kicks properly. That was really the story of the fight.
Chris Simon
Chris Simon:
I don’t think mcgregor gave up on the fight I just think his leg was compromised so he couldn’t circle out and back away like he wanted to. Also his corner told him to keep his left hand uo when exiting and he didn’t get his hand up to block that right hook that dropped him. It was more of him being outclassed in the skill department and getting calf kicked of course

Hey at 1:00 in the first round Conor tagged Dustin with a Jab but then refuses to throw the left. You can see how Dustin is dazzled from that right. I think if Conor would throw that left Dustin were out. What do you think? Do you know why Conor did not throw that punch? (sorry for the bad english).

Dustin went on an impressive 13 fight run in the lightweight division after their first fight.
Conor, we know went on his insane featherweight run, but after that he only had 2 lightweight fights and was inconsistent showing up in the ufc.
This goes to show how much more experience and training dustin gained over their years

Heart has always been Conor's problem. He quit in all 3 of his ufc losses. He has no where near as much heart as guys like Dustin, Nate & Justin. These guys are experienced in back and forth wars. Conor is a great hammer but a terrible nail.
Ben Scott
Ben Scott:
I should have bet this one! I felt like Dustin's striking defense had improved just enough to avoid getting hit clean, and lo and behold! Then again, I also thought Dan was gonna win, so.. maybe not 😂

Thanks for the great breakdown as always!
