Lyrics:

Ooh
Na na, yeah
I saw you dancing in a crowded room
You look so happy when I'm not with you
But then you saw me, caught you by surprise
A single teardrop falling from your eye
I don't know why I run away
I make you cry when I run away
You could've asked me why I broke your heart
You could've told me that you fell apart
But you walked past me like I wasn't there
And just pretended like you didn't care
I don't know why I run away
I make you cry when I run away
Take me back 'cause I wanna stay
Save your tears for another
Save your tears for another day
Save your tears for another day
So
I made you think that I would always stay
I said some things that I should never say
Yeah, I broke your heart like someone did to mine
And now you won't love me for a second time
I don't know why I run away, oh, girl
Said I make you cry when I run away
Girl, take me back 'cause I wanna stay
Save your tears for another
I realize that I'm much too late
And you deserve someone better
Save your tears for another day (Ooh, yeah)
Save your tears for another day (Yeah)
I don't know why I run away
I make you cry when I run away
Save your tears for another day, ooh, girl (Ah)
I said save your tears for another day (Ah)
Save your tears for another day (Ah)
Save your tears for another day (Ah)

I think this is a video of him saying the Grammys are a sham;

He shows he is lip syncing at the start
He spits on them after it looks like he is peeing on them
He throws a golden trophy like it's worthless (grammy)
Then turns himself into an icon of abuse in a relationship to entertain them
Where they would even clap for him if he shot himself.

With the entire premise of the CD showcasing how he's had to change himself just to be popular.

*One day in 2021 I’ll make music with The Weeknd. Remember this comment✨*
Ben Young
Ben Young:
So, this is my understanding of the After Hours music video timeline:
- Heartless: This is in the early stages of Weeknd's career where he is seeing the fame and money (represented by the lights). He is experimenting with drugs and enjoying how it feels. He is intoxicated with what this life could offer. This could also be referring to Vegas and how he feels at home/is not being judged so he's acting how he wants to (referred to in Alone Again and Blinding Lights).
- Blinding Lights: Weeknd's career is shooting off as he feels like his success is coming quicker than he expected. He is shooting to stardom at incredible speeds. The woman is the representation of an agent/rep, that pulls him up to the lime light and gets to be on stage. Video quickly distorts to show that he is still abusing drugs on his way to success. He is dancing and having a good time in the car showing that he is enjoying the path to stardom. The bodyguards/men in black are his demons (cocaine/depression) so he starts running away from his problems. At the end of the video, he is smiling unnaturally. Despite the pain and suffering he is going through, he understands that he must fake happiness to "make" it.
- After Hours (Short Film): Weeknd has now made it and the scars/damage to his face are a physical representation of what he is going through mentally. I think the tape on the nose is supposed to represent his cocaine use and how it's destroying his life. After leaving the Jimmy Kimmel show, the happiness he feels in front of people slowly fades away as he is after work (i.e. After Hours). As he is walking around the subway, he hears his own music, which might mean that wherever he goes he hears his music - indicating success. However, he is still carrying the pain and suffering after work indicated with him crying/yelling near the end of the video. Looking up to the lights (fame and money), he is dragged back to his old life of drug use. At the end of the video, he is in the elevator with a woman that is soon to be his.
- In Your Eyes: In the elevator, Weeknd metaphorically kills the man that the woman is with - at least in her head. In the beginning, she is dancing as if nothing is bothering her. Eventually, he starts chasing her because he thinks this is what will complete him. But she is running away from him hoping he doesn't find out about her cheating as he can see it "in her eyes". When he finally catches up with her (she gets caught), she cuts his head off causing him to become completely heartless. She told him at this point that she did indeed cheat and he feels completely cutoff. She is dancing with his head, but she no longer has his heart. She also seems ok with him being heartless and seems to somewhat enjoy causing him pain.
- Until I Bleed Out: I feel like there is a plot hole here but this video is about his drug use. He feels like he is using so much drugs that everything is a blur. The poking things in his face is how he basically feels under the influence of cocaine. He still continues to party even though he can't really tell what's going on. When he looks back, there are people grabbing him and bringing him down - possibly referring to how much fans want him. But in his head, he is out in the snow (cocaine) and lays down as it helps him clear his head.
- Snowchild: The video kicks off from Until I Bleed Out, where he is laying in the snow. He is reminiscing about his career. Initially talking about his crew and the video showing walking in the snow in Toronto. This might have a double meaning with his cocaine use. House of Balloons is referred in the first scene and then Kissland. He then goes to LA where the elevator is pointing down indicating that he is going to hell. The devil from his BBTM reappears which is both a reference to his earlier work as well as the hell that LA is which is consistent with the lyric (Cali was the missing but a ni**a leaving). There are references to the black panther album, starboy (crosses), and my dear melancholy (bats). At the end of the video, he is tired and trying to leave LA. He is going toward the darkness, he loses his jacket. The lights are all off and he doesn't need the glasses anymore. But yet again, he is pulled in by fame and money (blinding lights). He can't really let it go even though he wants to.
- Too Late: In the beginning, the end of Escape to LA is playing where he is saying "LA girls all look the same, I can't recognize, The same work done on their face". This represented with the two girls that have the same surgery done on their faces. From the voices and looks, they look the same. He gets the attention and adoration from these women, but he is still feeling cold and heartless. They are having a good time but the Weeknd is still feeling cold and heartless. The same women watch him and fall in love with him. But at the same time they are defined by unrealistic expectation of beauty and materialism. In which they love the body of the stripper and sew Weeknd's head onto the beauty they want to see. This might also mean, that when having sex is when the he feels whole again after the heartbreak the other girl caused him causing him to be heartless. I think the end is supposed to represent this is just a normal thing for him when he parties as we see the lady running by with her dog in the morning.
- Save Your Tears: From the women in LA, he is unfortunately bothered by his own beauty standards so he does plastic surgery to fit into LA. The people in the masks represents his fans - nameless and faceless from his perspective. He increasingly does crazier stuff to see if people will leave him - drink, spray champagne, and spit it out. He gets awards for his performances, but it means nothing to him. While in the public eye, he meets this woman and he wants to bring her to the stage (showing her in public) with him. He continuously refers to this girl that gives him a second chance (referred to in Hardest to Love and Scared to Live) - he gives her a chance to let him go by giving her the gun. She yells and finally pulls the trigger (ending the relationship). He feels like he is losing it at this point, there is so much pain and suffering. He finally decides to kill himself but his fans are still nameless and faceless so they don't know. I think the confetti is supposed to represent him releasing his music and we simply cheer his music even though he is going through unbelievable pain. He has the weird smile again showing that he knows this is what it takes to stay in the spotlight.

Granolanpho
Granolanpho:
I feel like this song is trying to shed light on the music and Hollywood industries’ corruption.

He's portraying an artist who obviously is successful (since he's performing onstage for other celebrities), and who has gone through great lengths to make it to the "top" (he literally altered his appearance through plastic surgery to look like this false image that society has made us think we need: perfect nose, chiseled jaw, larger than life lips and cheeks).

Despite his talent, performance, and "perfect" appearance, the crowd doesn't seem enthused or even the slightest entertained. They wear masks to hide their own true personalities because they too hide behind a fake image that they created to get to where they are; except, instead of the plastic surgery, they're wearing literal masks.

No one flinches or even looks at him as he performs. Only when he starts walking through the audience and messing with them and the surroundings do they begin to acknowledge his actions. I feel this speaks about how the media concerning artists and celebrities never shares (or pays attention) about the good they do, only the “crazy erratic” behavior through tabloids and paparazzi leaks.

He even awards himself his own trophy - the golden cup on the table, since no one sees his true talent as an artist. This sort of mirrors the Grammy's in how he wasn't nominated despite the huge success of his newest album. He celebrates himself by drinking and spraying the Champaign, still .. with no reaction from the audience. Finally an audience member (the girl with Hollywood's ideal body shape) notices him and isn't wearing a mask. But it's too late, he sees through the bs of the false social standards on looks & success, he is pushed to the limits of trying something so intense (shooting himself onstage), hoping to get the attention he deserves.

While he prances around the room, waiving the gun and scaring the audience in a Joker-esque fashion, he FINALLY has their attention. He gets ready to shoot himself and when the trigger is pulled we hear the FIRST sounds from the audience. It takes him joking to end his life to finally get some form of recognition. But even though the crowd now cheers in amusement to the stunt, he finally realizes the truth:

Although he has sacrificed everything to make it to the top, even his face, it will never be enough. He will never meet the standards that our society has falsely put in place as far as body image, and he won’t get the recognition he deserves, unless he attempts something life threatening.

If you picture this, and listen to the lyrics in the sense the video depicts, you will even see how that same message is woven into what is being said.

Edit**: Wow thank you for the comments and likes on this, glad to see others can see this imagery as well! Honestly so grateful for artists like The Weekend for creating such impactful content. As a filmmaker his music videos always inspire me! Cheers loving the same music guys <3

Eman k
Eman k:
In this video unlike the other ones he doesn't show the bandages and the scars on his face. He instead "covers" all his scars with an overly exaggerated plastic face, the type of face he needs to put up for the public. An artificial face. While in reality, it's simply a construct to hide his real self, who is cracked and damaged.

The girl is the only person who is natural, revealing who she really is. Meanwhile, he is hiding a gun, meaning that he's holding the tools to harm himself, and could potentially harm her. When the girl is about to go away, and he's telling her to "save her tears for another day" in other words not to leave, it comes to show that the girl actually holds all the power to harm him by leaving him, hence her holding the gun.

Once she leaves, he continues to put up a show for other people, using his destructive tendencies (wielding his gun) as entertainment for other people. In the end, he makes everyone believe he's about to kill himself, but it's again another trick to impress the public who briefly get scared, but then applaud him. Giving him more incentive to continue with this self-destructive persona.

Just a theory :)

I think this is a representation of a grammy performance. The audience are wearing masks to show their ‘fakeness’ and not their true intentions. Abel’s face is also botched up putting on a fake smile for a place he doesn’t want to be at, hence the fake suicide. End of the day, “never need a grammy, I’m what a grammy need”. Album of the year

Ok. So he picked her (Selena G) out, thought it'd be a fun rebound. You know, another conquest who'd end up in love and crying for him like all the others (hence the gun behind his back) but lo and behold, he found himself in love, all by himself in awe of Selena's aloofness (hence the change of gun posession). The ending signifies how he ALMOST ended up doing himself harm in his quest to be a player.

This has an electronica 80's sound to it.
Not a fan of the song, but it beats rap and Beyoncé.

The end of the video, obviously staged, would have been fantastic to see at the Super Bowl. He probably would have been in a lot of trouble, but his record sales (do they still make records?) would have been off the charts.
As morbid as this may sound, if he produced a good song that resonated with practically all generations and blew his brains out for his art on stage, everyone would buy the album
